 Medium-dark red. Roasted plum, leather and nuts on the nose, plus a slight vegetal nuance. Soft, lush and somewhat gamey in the mouth. Finishes with a hint of green acidity but nicely ripe tannins. Not short.  (5/2000)

A longtime staff favorite as anyone who has visited our Redwood City store knows. Anthony Barton once joked that he and Clyde together have drunk most of the Langoa Barton produced in '97. I have enjoyed this wine many times myself and I love it for its classic appeal. This is a claret lover's vintage, the kind of wine to enjoy with a good beef roast or your favorite ribeye steak. Notes of cedar on the nose. Tangy, red currant notes on the palate. Lively acidity. Tannins still present but perfectly integrated. Needed about an hour in the decanter to show its best side.

I still love this wine. At this price I was able to buy almost a case, and I am still drinking it. There are lovely herbal and mineral flavors, along with red fruit and a bit of spice. There is plenty of life left in this wine to keep some in the cellar. I can’t imagine there will be anymore of it judging by how much we have sold, so don’t miss out on an inexpensive, aged, classified Bordeaux.

This wine is PERFECT right now—mature and delicious Bordeaux at a great price. We sold the last 50 cases immediately and now we have our last 50 to sell. Anthony Barton ends up the hero once again both for his super wines as well as his insistence on reasonable pricing and the impact he’s had on the topic of value.

Did not understand this wine at the first bottle.

Gave the second bottle a breathe and found fruit in the middle, and very strong, dark leather at the end. Stood out as a wine with a character I had never had before. Got better with every sip, was sorry when the second (last) bottle was gone.

Would order again.

Threw a bit of sediment, but less than I was expecting for a wine with over 10 years of age on it...ruby red core, with just the slightest hint of brick around the edges...

I get leather, paper and an almost gingerbread component on the complex nose...backed by an almost sweet pepper scent and a bit of black currant and chocolate...

The palate is soft and clean with juicy flavors of cherry being the most pronounced...I also get a bit of plum and more black currant...tannins are well integrated...

Dry finish with just a bit of cedar, mineral notes and a complex slightly sweet herbal note...

I bought 2 bottles of this wine on Monday night and brought one of them to Christmas dinner last night and it was SUCH A HIT! The wine was perfect with our holiday meal. I don't know much about wine but do know that this bottle for under $40 was better than any $150 bottle that has been recommended to me by different wine sommelier's at high end restaurants! Everyone at dinner was blown away by the wine! I'm going back to buy more this weekend!

Just took a bottle to the 2nd Annual Vayniac Party at Ft. Mason. It disappeared in about 2 minutes. This wine is just plain great! I give it a 4.5 because I don't know what would be a 5.0 (maybe liquid clouds and harp music?)

This wine is fantastic right now! It will be very versatile and go with most any meal. It's not overpowering, but has plenty of flavor and fruit, and that fantastic bouquet. For the price, this is simply the best Bordeaux I have ever had (only a bottle or two of First Growth costing hundreds of dollars has been as enjoyable for me), and definitely the best bottle of wine I have ever bought at K&L!(and I primarily like Italian wines... sorry Guido.). I am in small part responsible for the last 50 cases going so fast... and I plan on repeating that with this round. Thank you Clyde for chasing down more from the winery. Just in time for holiday meals! Stock up now.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.

Saint Julien

- St. Julien, the smallest of the four famous appellations of the Haut Medoc, is known for highly extracted, finely structured, Cabernet-based reds. It is nestled between Pauillac to the north and Margaux to the south. Like St. Estephe, there are no first growths in this area. Leoville-las-Cases, Leoville Poyferre, Leoville Barton, Ducru Beaucaillou, and Gruard Larose are the second-growths of St. Julien followed by Lagrange which is the only third-growth. Beychevelle, Branaire Ducru, St. Pierre, and Talbot, which are all fourth-growth wines, round out the grand cru classe chateaux. In the last several vintages, wineries from this appellation have been out-performing their traditional rankings making many of the wines from this region some of the best values in red wine today.
