2011 Argyros Estate "Atlantis" White Cyclades

SKU #1096064 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2011 Atlantis, a PGI Cyclades wine now, is 90% Assyrtiko, and 5% each of Athiri and Aidani. This blend has often been nice for the price, but it certainly seems to be trending upwards. With fine persistence and intensity, this is beautifully balanced and tightly wound, with better aromatics than the winery’s regular, unoaked Assyrtiko due to the blend (5% each of Athiri and Aidani added to the Assyrtiko), if not as much depth and intensity. This is simply lovely this year, one of the finest values in this report, transparent, focused and crisp, yet caressing and accessible. If you’re looking for fruity and sweet, this is not as likely to fulfill your goals. It is an overachiever, though. Drink now-2016. (4/2012)

Wine Enthusiast

Notes of lemon rind, mineral and a spin of warming spice start this cheerful, easy-drinking white blend from the Cyclades. This is what Greek whites are all about: fresh, lively fruit and a clean finish?that pairs great with seafood. (9/2012)

K&L Notes

90% Assyrtiko, 5% Athiri and 5% Aidani - Yiannis Argyros is a winelover who works very hard to obtain high quality grapes in order to make superior quality wines. And there are many professionals in the Greek wine market who think of Yiannis Argyros as the best Greek winemaker in dry white wines and dessert wines. His efforts to produce high quality wines have been worldwide acknowledged, as indicates the award by the Wine & Spirits Magazine as one of 100 best wineries in the world for 2005 and 2006. The Atlantis white is a crystal-clear yellow color, with a distinctive flavor with citrus overtones. The relatively high acidity of Asyrtico gives it a crisp freshness, while the vineyard's extremely low yield offers body, structure and substance.

- We have the Greeks to thank for introducing wine into Italy and France. And while the legacy of ancient Greek culture lives on, little recognition is given to its modern-day contributions to the wine industry. From the Peloponnese in the south, to Macedonia and Epirus in the north, and islands like Crete, Samos and Santorini, fine wine is once again being made and most of it from indigenous grape varieties not grown in other countries. Styles range from hearty, rustic reds to crisp, neutral whites and heavenly dessert wines. Click for a list of bestselling items from Greece.
