2011 Arregi Getariako Txakolina

SKU #1093716 Wine Spectator

This lively white is light-bodied, with bright, citrusy acidity and a light spritz. Too playful to be complex, but briny and mineral notes add interest. As refreshing as a glass of lemonade. Drink now. (12/2012)

K&L Notes

I remember this Txakoli quite fondly from a recent overnight stay in Getaria, the picturesque Basque village at the bottom of the sloped, emerald green hued getariako Txakolina vineyards. Mabry (Keith, our Hollywood store manager) and I were eating an assortment of delicious pintxos, watching the closing minutes of the Real Madrid FC Barcelona match. To the delight of a couple of Real Madrid fans, their team scored the winning goal with just several minutes left to play. They cheered - and then quickly left the bar (Pais Vasco is NOT Real Madrid territory!) We stayed, ate a bit more and drank more of this - Arregi, their delicious house Txakoli. With all of the bright, slightly effervescent, lean, salty mineral thirst quenching qualities you could hope for in a Txakoli, this is quintessential summertime wine. Easily, this is one of my top 10 wines of the summer 2012 season. In this wine, textbook Txakoli meets the ideal light-bodied summer white wine in the most refreshing, user-friendly way. Its raciness is balanced by uber-juicy citrus flavors, and its got minerals aplenty as it should, but wihtout being too austere or sharp. I love the fact that it's only 11% abv too. There's so many dishes this will complement - just think back to your trip to San Sebastian and all the fabulous pinxos you enjoyed with the local white wine...it does oysters as well as it does grilled sausages, finishing on all accounts with an invigorating zip. Highly recommended!
