2010 Southern Right Pinotage Walker Bay

SKU #1092616 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Raised for just over ten months in 32% new oak, the 2010 Pinotage has a very attractive bouquet of blueberry, dark plum, pressed flowers and a hint of wild mint. The palate is medium-bodied with a crisp, citric entry. (12/2012)

K&L Notes

Southern Right is a winery in South Africa's Walker Bay specializing in Pinotage and Sauvignon Blanc. Owner Anthony Hamilton Russel chose cool, clay-soiled vineyards for his Pinotage with the goal of creating a refined, ageworthy style of wine from the grape. The wine succeeds in offering layers of berry fruit, classic wood spice notes, subtle smoke, minerals and an elegant texture, with none of the burnt rubber quality that is so often associated with lesser versions of the varietal.

Pinotage is one of the most misunderstood grape varietals in the world. Many dismiss all wines made from it because some bad examples are rough aromatically. That is a mistake, because it is to South Africa what Zinfandel is to California, a signature varietal. The Southern Right Pinotage from Walker Bay is a great wine to try to get to know these wines, as it is authentic and high quality. The nose reminded me very of old fashioned northern Rhone Syrah with smoke and pepper notes. In the mouth it has a flavor all its own with a rich texture and a finish that is not too high in tannin but has plenty of good acidity. This is a great value, and a perfect bottle for grilled meats!

We get a lot of requests for Pinotage, and this release from Southern Right (of the Hamilton Russel family) is a standout. It's undoubtedly Pinotage, with gamy, meaty and herbal aromas and flavors coursing through through ripe dark fruits accented by hints of smoke - as one might expect. Yet there is a very unexpected vibrancy and freshnesh to this bottle, not to mention depth and length on the finish that is cause for celebration. This Pinotage passes the test!

South Africa

- Now that it has adopted a multi-racial attitude, and now that the world has embraced its government and its exports, South Africa has become a major wine producer. Unfortunately, South Africa has had a difficult time joining the ranks of competitive winemaking countries. During the anti-apartheid sanctions in the 1980s, South African wine was dealt the huge blow when it was removed from the international market, and for political reasons it was quite difficult for wine producers to market wine to the black majority. Things are finally looking up for the wine industry here, and quality has never been higher. South Africa produces a grape cloned from Pinot Noir and Cinsault, called Pinotage, which is the country's unique varietal. Chenin Blanc (known as Steen) makes up one-third of its vines. Cabernet, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Shiraz are becoming increasingly popular as are Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Click for a list of bestselling items from South Africa.
