 Here is a very solid, slightly sinewy look at Zin that hits the mark in terms of defined blackberry fruit, spice and structure. It is big but well-balanced, and it never once threatens with excess, but its fairly gruff finishing tannins remind a bit much of Petite Sirah. Still, this is a deep, well-filled wine that has good places to go, and however rough and rugged it is now, it is sure to reward four or five years of patience.  (9/2011)

 The 2008 Zinfandel Morisoli Vineyard is a compelling wine graced with expressive dark red fruit, flowers, mint and licorice. It shows gorgeous finesse, plenty of mid-palate richness and terrific overall balance. Sweet floral notes and succulent black cherries wrap around the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018.  Medium red. Pungent, high-pitched aromas of crushed cherry, mint, rose petal and orange peel. A smooth, juicy midweight with good energy and a hint of pepper to the red berry flavors. - The bid to name Zinfandel California's "State Varietal" may have failed, but this red wine grape, grown extensively in California since the mid-1800s, is grown in few other places in the world. Sadly, much of what's cultivated today is planted where it's too hot and flat. But when planted to well-drained, hillside vineyards that are warm but not too hot, like those in Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley and Amador County in the Sierra Foothills, Zinfandel can produce wines with plenty of character. High in natural alcohol and tannin, grown carefully it can be rich and complex, with dark fruit berry fruit and peppery spice. The most known example of Zinfandel outside of California is Italy's Primitivo, which can be similar in style, but is often a bit lighter and less alcoholic than West Coast examples.
