Paul-Marie et Fils Pineau de Charentes Vieux Red # 5 (750ml)

SKU #1091596

Pineau de Charentes is a fortified wine made in Cognac by blending Cognac to unfermented grape juice to alt fermenation. In this case, the Cognac is a stunning old Grande Champagne Cognac from a ninth generation Cognac producer mixed with what is thought to be Merlot and a little bit of Cabernet Sauvignon. But don't let the ambiguity here deter you, what IS clear is that this limited edition Pineau de Charentes (there were only 780 bottles made) is stunning. Bottled at cask strength, unfined and unfiltered. Of it Master of Wine Christy A. Canterbury writes: "Rusty salmon in color with copper reflections, this is a visually enticing drink. The nose is subdued, especially with respect to the usually exuberant character of most Pineau des Charentes. Real Maraschino cherries, Canadian maple syrup and raspberry jam rise from the glass. Fairly dry on the attack yet moderately sweet on the finish, this Pineau des Charentes exhibits characteristically refreshing acidity. The generous alcohol is well-integrated with a bare acknowledgement of heat on the palate. Drink up--it's so delicious it would be a shame to wait!"

Quite possibly one of the best dessert beverages I have EVER tasted! No kidding... Intense, viscous, guava paste, marron glacé, quince and Manchego cheese (seriously), almond, marzipan, and a touch of spicy cinnamon. Not to mention pecans... Lots of it. All of that in the glass. To be served chilled, with a variety of desserts from pecan or pumpkin pie to Clafoutis and even chocolate.

I love Pineau de Charentes! Well, good PdC that is. I've had some pretty bad ones over the years but, this one, this one is just freaking fantastic. Layers upon layers of flavors like guava, hazelnuts, almonds, red berries, cherries, maple syrup and pecan pie all dance on the tongue and tickle the taste buds.
