2008 Mount Eden Estate Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
(includes 16% merlot and 2% petit verdot; aged in a 50/50 blend of French and American oak): Opaque ruby. Fragrant dark berry and cherry scents are deepened by notes of cured tobacco, vanilla, licorice and dark chocolate, with a smoky mineral nuance adding vibrancy. Sappy, penetrating blackcurrant and bitter cherry flavors are sweetened by notes of vanilla, mocha and candied flowers. This powerful, elegant cabernet finishes youthfully tannic and long, with excellent clarity.
Mount Eden's 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate comes across as silky, perfumed and impeccably balanced. Dark red berries, flowers, mint and spices flesh out in this gracious, medium-bodied wine. The Estate is all about subtlety and class. Sweet floral notes reappear to frame the exquisite finish. The blend is 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Mourvèdre and 2% Cabernet Franc.
Wine & Spirits
Tightly built, focused on tart, woodland cherry flavor, this finds a fresh balance between juicy and firm. Oak adds richness to the tannins, tilting the balance in their direction, but the fruit has a cool persistence that isn’t about to give up. If you like coastal cabernet (what else would you call a Médocain blend?), this is a Pacific red that belongs in your cellar. (1,218 cases) Mount Eden Vineyards, Saratoga, CA
Rustic, dense, chewy and tannic, but also deeply concentrated, so be patient with the potent currant, crushed rock and cedar flavors. Best to let this sleep for a few years, or at least give it a good decant. Best from 2015 through 2028. 1,218 cases made.
The 2008 Mount Eden Estate Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet is composed of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot. It was barrel-fermented and aged for 22 months in half French and half American oak (75% new) and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Elegant and refined in style, it exhibits classic Santa Cruz Mountains blackcurrant and briary aromas and flavors, with undertones of menthol and graphite. Creamy vanilla, wood spice, and dark chocolate layers from oak aging add complexity to the core of black fruits and firm tannins. Minerals lace the finish. This is classic, cool-climate California Cabernet with the structure to age from a landmark California producer.
