2009 Monteviejo "Petite Fleur" Mendoza

SKU #1088891 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2009 Petite Fleur is a blend of 50% Malbec, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon with the balance Syrah and Merlot in which 50% of the wine was aged in new French oak. Notions of sandalwood, Asian spices, tobacco, violets, and assorted black fruits inform the nose of a savory, ripe, succulent wine with enough underlying structure to evolve for 2-3 years. It will deliver prime drinking from 2013 to 2021. (12/2011)

(mostly malbec, with some merlot, syrah and cabernet sauvignon) Bright medium ruby. Sexy, slightly jammy aromas of blackberry, licorice, herbs, minerals and dark chocolate. Suave and seamless but with harmonious acidity giving definition and lift to the blackberry, violet and bitter chocolate flavors. Serious, complex wine, finishing with ripe, building tannins (2/2011)

It seems as if it was just yesterday that we had only a few wines being imported from Argentina, particularly Malbecs, their national red wine. But, that has changed, hugely. There is tons of wonderful drinking Argentine wines on the market today. A great example of this is this luscious, nicely balanced blend (Malbec 50%, Cabernet Sauvignon 30%, with the balance being Syrah and Merlot) of what is currently coming to us in quantity from Argentina. Deep ruby in color, the nose shows opulent aromas of currants, violets, and white pepper spiciness, with notes of sandalwood and cigar-like tones. Amazingly complex and rich on the palate, this Gem is integrated and broad with great mid-range feel and a long, warm, focused finish. Rusty has informed me that this will be one of our house red Gems for the month. 14.5% ABV
Drink from 2012 to 2018

- Argentina is regarded as one of the most dynamic wine-producing nations in the world, and possibly the most important wine-producing region in South America. Only four countries in the world produce more wine than Argentina. Considerable investments (much of which has come from famous French, Italian and California wine producers) have been made in new vineyards and winemaking technology in the past several years, which along with recent plantings of more premium varieties of grapes, has made Argentina much more competitive internationally. The Mendoza region is the most important region in Argentina's wine industry. And Malbec, among other Bordeaux varietals grown here, reigns supreme.
