2011 Fournier "Urban Uco" Malbec Tempranillo Mendoza

SKU #1088715 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2011 Urban Uco is a blend of 50% Tempranillo and 50% Malbec that spent 3 months in oak. Deep purple in color, with an inviting bouquet of smoke, blackberry, and blueberry, on the palate it is loaded with flavor, depth, and length. This stunning overachiever may be the finest value in my Argentina tastings. Buy it by the case. (12/2011)

(50% each malbec and tempranillo): Dark red. Expressive, superripe nose offers cherry liqueur, plum, fig jam and flowers. Juicy and vinous, with surprising freshness and lift to the plum and redcurrant flavors. This savory, slightly clenched wine would go well with fatty meats. Finishes with sweet, even tannins and good length and lift. Very good value. (4/2012)

K&L Notes

The 2011 Urban Uco will be one of the Top Values this year! Not only does the Wine Advocate rave about the sheer awesomeness of this wine but we've tasted it too and couldn't agree more. This blend of Tempranillo and Malbec from Mendoza is a more finely tuned machine than you would expect at the low price point. There is bold black fruit flavors, but they are surrounded by wonderful mineral and earthy nuances. A case purchase kind of wine. (Keith Mabry, K&L Wine Merchants-Hollywood)

Totally fun and delicious for the price. Brings the rich fruity spice of Malbec and the depth and structure of Tempranillo to the table at a crazy affordable price. Just easy drinking for your summer bbq, but you can tell this is quality from the first sip. Surprising when you see the price. Total find.

- Argentina is regarded as one of the most dynamic wine-producing nations in the world, and possibly the most important wine-producing region in South America. Only four countries in the world produce more wine than Argentina. Considerable investments (much of which has come from famous French, Italian and California wine producers) have been made in new vineyards and winemaking technology in the past several years, which along with recent plantings of more premium varieties of grapes, has made Argentina much more competitive internationally. The Mendoza region is the most important region in Argentina's wine industry. And Malbec, among other Bordeaux varietals grown here, reigns supreme.
