2010 Tajinaste Tinto Tradicional Valle de la Orotava (Tenerife)
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
(100% listan negra): Vivid ruby-red. Spicy redcurrant and cherry scents are complicated by dried rose and blood orange. Juicy and penetrating, offering lively red fruit flavors and a hint of black pepper. Finishes brisk and appealingly sweet, with gentle tannins and lingering red fruit notes.
Tajinaste was one of the first (maybe the first?) of the many Canary Islands wines to be selected, represented and championed by importer José Pastor. From the island of Tenerife, known for its high elevation vineyards and other worldly landscape, Tajinaste has once again crafted some of my favorite releases. In my mind, it is arguably the most consistent as well, producing wines that both excite the most critical palates while pleasing those who simply want something delicious to drink. The red is produced from listan negro grapes, and always has a wonderful, somewhat savory dark cherry fruit flavor profile with peppery space and lovely leafy nuances adding freshness and interest to the wine.
