2010 Karanika Terra Levea Assyrtiko

SKU #1085122

Located in the far northwest region of Macedonia, in the Amyndeo appellation next to lake Vegoritis at 650 m above sea level, Domaine Karanika farms 4 ha of vineyards planted primarily to old-vine Xinomavro (indigenous to the region), with some younger plantings of Assyrtiko, Limniona, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Mavrodaphne. Surrounded by mountains, the climate here is primarily continental, with warm summer days that cool at night, cold winters, and ample rainfall. The 2010 Terra Levea Assyrtiko shows off the best of what the varietal has to offer: intense grapefruit, apricot and pear and citrus aromas and flavors, with floral and dandelion accents. It is silky on the palate, with balanced acidity and spicy mineral notes on the finish.

- We have the Greeks to thank for introducing wine into Italy and France. And while the legacy of ancient Greek culture lives on, little recognition is given to its modern-day contributions to the wine industry. From the Peloponnese in the south, to Macedonia and Epirus in the north, and islands like Crete, Samos and Santorini, fine wine is once again being made and most of it from indigenous grape varieties not grown in other countries. Styles range from hearty, rustic reds to crisp, neutral whites and heavenly dessert wines. Click for a list of bestselling items from Greece.
