2006 Gerovassiliou "Avaton"

SKU #1085119

Gerovassiliou Avaton is comprised of three indigenous Greek varietals: 40% Limnio (mentioned by the philosopher Aristotle as "Limnia ampelos" - meaning vine from the Greek island Limnos - and is the oldest attested Greek grape variety), 40% Mavrotragano, and 20% Mavroudi. Avaton is produced in Epanomi, near Thessaloniki (Northern Greece), where the low yielding vineyards are cultivated in compliance with ecologically sustainable management practices. Entirely fermented in oak tanks, malolactic fermentation ensues in the same tanks and then the wine is aged up to 18 months in new French oak barrels. Avaton has a dark ruby color and an excellent and complex structure. Its blackberry fruit offers spice and depth. It finishes dry and is totally unique. This wine is drinking deliciously now yet will improve over 10-15 years. An interesting partner with hearty stews and roasted game dishes.

- We have the Greeks to thank for introducing wine into Italy and France. And while the legacy of ancient Greek culture lives on, little recognition is given to its modern-day contributions to the wine industry. From the Peloponnese in the south, to Macedonia and Epirus in the north, and islands like Crete, Samos and Santorini, fine wine is once again being made and most of it from indigenous grape varieties not grown in other countries. Styles range from hearty, rustic reds to crisp, neutral whites and heavenly dessert wines. Click for a list of bestselling items from Greece.
