2010 Samos Vin Doux Muscat (375ml)

SKU #1082672 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2010 Muscat “Vin Doux,” a signature wine for the island, is reviewed from 750ml; it also comes in a 375ml size. This is often one of my favorite value choices from Greece. It hits another homer this year, mingling richness, sweetness and acidity into a beautiful whole. Simply a pleasure to drink, this is very well priced and utterly delicious. I think these can age, although their character will change as they do, but it is really hard to resist right now. Drink now-2020. (10/2011)

K&L Notes

The Samos Cooperative is one of Greece's original co-ops, and is one of the top producers of the island's famous Muscat. Samos boasts an extremely steep terrain, which means many of the vineyards here, especially those at high elevation, are planted on pezoules, or terraces. The trouble this provides in terms of necessitating hand harvesting is more than made up for by the wine's quality and immensely pleasurable taste. This dessert wine is fortified to 15% alc. It offers the unctuous, exotic flavors typically associated with the grape, along with soft acidity and a nutty, rich finish. Ideal when served just before coffee, accompanied by hard cookies or just on its own.

- We have the Greeks to thank for introducing wine into Italy and France. And while the legacy of ancient Greek culture lives on, little recognition is given to its modern-day contributions to the wine industry. From the Peloponnese in the south, to Macedonia and Epirus in the north, and islands like Crete, Samos and Santorini, fine wine is once again being made and most of it from indigenous grape varieties not grown in other countries. Styles range from hearty, rustic reds to crisp, neutral whites and heavenly dessert wines. Click for a list of bestselling items from Greece.
