Talisker 25 Year Old Single Malt Whisky (750ml)
Previously only available as part of Diageo’s annual Special Releases program, and now bottled at the classic Talisker strength of 45.8%, instead of cask strength. Initially salty, then sweet and spicy on the nose, with summer berries, heather honey, and an earthy note, plus subtle peat. Spicy and drying on the slightly waxy palate, with licorice, aniseed, and prominent peat embers. The finish is medium in length, peppery, and relatively tannic. (Vol. 21, #3)
Typically this bottling comes in at a very high proof, but the 2011 edition is bottled at Talisker's traditional proof 45.8%. Either way, it's an incredible deal for one of my absolute favorite distilleries. There is no question Talisker is one of Scotland's true gems. It hasn't received the incredible acclaim of superstars like Lagavulin and Ardbeg, but it should absolutely be considered in the top tier of the world's distilleries. Serge Valentine's Whiskyfun.com rates Talisker among the "Grand Cru Classe" of Single Malt (i.e. Lag, Ardbeg, Brora, and Glenugie).
