The 04 Blair Estate Red, a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot, represents a rare treat for any traditionally-minded connoisseur seeking a deal in pedigreed Napa wine at the onset of its prime drinking window. Located on the high-draining alluvial soils between St. Helena and Calistoga on the Silverado Trail, the Blair Vineyard has been the source for premium Cabernet and Cabernet-based productions by the likes of Duckhorn, Rombauer, and S.P. Drummer (it is adjacent to Duckhorn's famed Three Palms vineyard) over the years in addition to a small amount of estate-produced wines. Having benefitted from a few years ageing in bottle, the 2004 is showing exceptional development. Aromas and flavors of blackcurrant and dried fig with hints of cedar, tobacco, and baking spice jump from the glass. This is too good of a deal to last. This is a big, rich, full bodied wine but with a touch of bottle age to soften out some of its tannins. This is a wine built to thrill.

I love a big, rich California red! For $19.99 this is one of the biggest steal's in the store. This just scream's for thick grilled steak. Topped with mushrooms and blue cheese. Sorry, I must stop typing and fire up the grill.

An astonishing value in a ready to drink Napa red blend (63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Cabernet Franc, 4% Merlot). Rich fruit and spicy oak on the nose. Tart blackberry and sweet black cherry fruits. Black licorice. On the palate the super rich texture and extraordinary concentration are balanced by lively acidity and soft tannins. This wine is simply pure pleasure to drink. Dare I say hedonistic? Throws a bit of a sediment, so you'll want to decant this. Don't worry about getting the leftover wine back in the bottle; there won't be any.

This is a great bottle that is well priced and combines the ripe and rich elements that you expect from Napa cabernet with subtle restraint and deft precision. The creamy middle fruit is very plush but never edges into over ripeness and the fine limestone minerality keeps the finish long and detailed. Several years of bottle age have landed this bargain squarely in the beginning of its drinking window so enjoy now and over the next decade.

If you want an amazing Napa Bordeaux Blend that drinks like $50 but only is $20, then look no further. This wine is deep and intense with layers of savory black fruit and spice. On the nose, a touch of toasty oak black cherry, and the mid palate is full of ripe black olive and anise, with a touch of eucalyptus and fresh herbs. Dense and full bodied, this wine has weight and good length on the finish. Can be consumed now or put in the cellar for a few more years.

Blair is back! The 2001, 02, 03 and 05 sold very fast with lots of people coming back for more. The subtle nose shows spice, blackberry and dusty cedar. The palate still shows nice black fruit but it is muted with spice and leather. The finish has only a slight astringency with a lingering cedar aroma.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
