Everything about this wine is deeply golden, from the color to the flavors, which rotate around roasted pineapple, peach and kumquat. The sweet fruit is matched with a ruddy, ferrous earthiness that makes the wine feel firm, and balances it toward the cheese course or less sweet desserts.
Ebulliently floral on the nose, this decadently creamy Tokaji bursts with characteristic honey, peach preserve and dried fig sweetness. A streak of citrusy acidity adds balance, while subtle hints of caramelized sugar and tea leaves add twists to the long, honey-kissed finish.
Sweet, with luscious apricot, peach compote and golden raisin held up by a well of latent acidity that drives the spice, chalk and candied lemon zest notes on the long finish. Drink now through 2020.
Marmalade, luscious sweetness, thick mouthfeel, long treacle finish. A tour de force. So beguiling! 18/20 points.
The methods and traditions of producing Aszú wines have changed little since the 17th century. Aszú berries are macerated with top-quality, fully fermented dry, white wines. Depending on the vintage, the resulting Aszú wines mature at different sweetness levels, although they generally stay within a range of four to six puttonyos ("puttonyos" are used as the measurement of sweetness of the final wine: on a scale of one to six, the more puttonyos, the sweeter, richer and rarer the Tokaji). Carefully pruned vines in first and second growth vineyards, handpicked instead of machine-harvested grapes and barrel-aging for a minimum of three years in 14th century cellars ensures these rich, refreshing wines are always of the highest quality. Mainly Furmint and Hárslevelú with a touch of Muskotály.
