2001 Calabretta Etna Rosso

SKU #1077462 93 points James Suckling

Slightly cooked character with a strong aromas of spices, dried fruit, and dried fruits. Amarone-like. Full and juicy. This really grows on you. So flavorful. Just released now. Strange to be so mature but wonderful. Fascinating wine from biodynamic grapes. (10/2011)

K&L Notes

This fascinating red was aged for eight long years in massive 50hl Slavonian oak barrels! Partially foot-trodden Nerello Mascalese, about as authentic as an Old School wine as you're liable to find anywhere! This comes from a 70-80 year-old vineyard (who knows what is in this red, but very likely there is much much more than Nerello) which sits at 900-2700 meters upon the active volcano that is Mt Etna. In other words, wow! This represents a rare opportunity to taste aged Nerello; don't pass it up!
