 The 2005 Vina Alberdi Reserva is pure Tempranillo from the highest sites in the Rodezno and Labastida estates that is aged in American oak for two years. It has a lifted bouquet with diffuse brambly red fruit, heather and lavender. The palate has a touch of gingerbread on the entry. It possesses a fine lattice of tannins with an attractive core of peppery red fruit that leads to a leather-tinged finish with hints of orange rind and soy. It is composed, refined and is brimming with personality. Drink now-2020.  (8/2012)

 Dark red. Redcurrant, dried cherry and vanillin oak on the nose, with a smoky mineral quality in the background. Lively red fruit and rose pastille flavors are complemented by sweet vanilla bean and cola nuances. The oakiness fades away on the long finish, which is juicy, expansive and seamless. This wine's lively acidity makes it refreshing and easy to drink now, but it really deserves patience.  (10/2010)

The result is a seven-year-old wine, delicious now but capable of further aging. Unlike La Rioja Alta's other cuvées, the Alberdi is 100 percent Tempranillo and offers a classic profile of mellow fruit framed by vanilla from American oak. Another offering from a favorite Rioja producer, this Viña Alberdi from Rioja Alta went ahead and got itself 90 points from Tanzer and backs that score up in a delightful way. The nose leaps from the glass with dark cherry, notes of spice and just a hint of cola. The palate carries through with the same cherry note, rich and deep, wrapped in silky tannins and held up by just the right amount of acidity. The oak and fruit are perfectly integrated, and there is a lovely vanilla spice note to it that really makes this a very complex and satisfying wine for the price. Rioja is one of my go-to wines for many sorts of dishes, lamb and pork to be sure, but this wine is balanced enough to go quite well on a Thanksgiving table.

- A very important red grape varietal that's native to Northern Spain, grown across the north and central regions of the country. Low in acid and alcohol, with subtle strawberry, leather and tobacco notes, the grape responds well to oak aging and plays particularly well with others. Tempranillo is an important component, when combined with Garnacha, Mazuelo, Viura and Graciano, of Rioja, with the best examples coming for the cooler, higher-elevation regions like Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. It is also grown in significant quantities in the Ribera del Duero where it is called Tinto Fino and Penèdes where it is called Ull de Llebre o Ojo de Llebre. Tempranillo hasn't gained a particularly strong foothold outside of Spain, achieving some success under the name Tinto Roriz in Portugal. There it is used as a component of Port and in the table wines of the Ribera del Duero and the Dão.


- With more land under vine than any other country in the world, Spain is the great sleeping wine giant. In recent years, a great deal of money and passion has been poured in the burgeoning Spanish wine industry, helping to improve quality among its vast array of wines from sparkling Cava to Sherry to Rioja Gran Reserva. The most important red-wine-producing regions are Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Navarra in the north and Priorat and Penedes in the northeast.
