2010 Shenandoah Vineyards "Special Reserve" Amador Zinfandel

There's just a splash of Petite Sirah in this excellent Zin from Shenandoah Vineyards in the Sierra Nevada foothill town of Plymouth, which adds just a touch of meatiness to an otherwise fruit-driven wine. Full-bodied, with a kick of spice and pepper, soft tannins and refreshing acidity, this is a rich Zin but it's not so big as to overpower a meal. Nice work!

This wine is always stellar and the 2010 just outshined the great '09! Well balanced jammy fruit and soft pepper spice make a heck of a Zin compatible with an assornment of food. Definitely a party wine to stock up on!

We have been selling this wine here at K&L for over ten years now. The price hasn't changed much in all that time and the wine just keeps getting better. This 2010 vintage may be the best yet. Classic, spicy/brambly Amador character. Lively, bright fruit, pleasingly ripe. Unquestionably our best value in a California Zin.

I have always been astounded by the quality of this Zinfandel in previous vintages, regardless of the price. But, with the incredible quality of this 2010, this is one of the top 2010 Zinfandels of the vintage. Deep ruby in color, nose is opulent with spicy white pepper to red berry fruit characteristics, integrated, really fine tannins, plumy notes, that Amador/Sierra foothills mineral characteristic, and a well-defined, broad, refreshing finish. It is, according to Rusty, an amazing Gem that will be our house red for the month. In fact, we are on our second case of this beauty. 14.5% ABV (Jim Barr)

Always well done wine. This Zin from the Sobon family is the ebst bargain Zin in the shop, period. Rich and lush, vibrant and flashy, this does what Zin is supposed to do, make you say yum.

Tannins take a definite back seat to the vibrantly driven, sumptuous fruit in this zaftig mountain Zinfandel from the Sobon family. Early pioneers in the Amador county wine country, Leon and Shirley Sobon established Shenandoah Vineyards way back in 1977, and they have been committed to sustainably-farmed, low yield, minimal-interventionist winemaking from the beginning. Serve this juicy hedonistic, full-bodied Zin (a splash of Petit Sirah added this year for textural depth) with avocado, bacon and swiss burgers on any Wednesday night to put you over the hump….

This is a great value everyday Zin from Shenandoah. The mountain fruit has great structure as well as a mouth filling lushness. On the finish a nice peppery quality and even some rubbing spices add depth. If a Zin of this quality for this price wasn’t enough, you can also feel great about choosing a sustainably produced wine. The winery is solar powered and many other choices have been made to reduce the environmental impact of this wine.

- The bid to name Zinfandel California's "State Varietal" may have failed, but this red wine grape, grown extensively in California since the mid-1800s, is grown in few other places in the world. Sadly, much of what's cultivated today is planted where it's too hot and flat. But when planted to well-drained, hillside vineyards that are warm but not too hot, like those in Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley and Amador County in the Sierra Foothills, Zinfandel can produce wines with plenty of character. High in natural alcohol and tannin, grown carefully it can be rich and complex, with dark fruit berry fruit and peppery spice. The most known example of Zinfandel outside of California is Italy's Primitivo, which can be similar in style, but is often a bit lighter and less alcoholic than West Coast examples.

Sierra Foothills/El Dorado

- This sweeping inland territory (an AVA on its own right), encompassing El Dorado, Fiddletown, Shenandoah and Amador, has been on the grape-growing map since the Gold Rush. With the exception of high-altitude El Dorado, the vineyards here are sun-baked and hot—in other words, best suited to old-vine zinfandel, petit sirah and Rhône varietals. The cooler climes of El Dorado are ideal for cabernet, chardonnay and merlot.
