2010 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese (Pre-Arrival)
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
Pale golden yellow. Heady aromas of strawberry and nut oil, with a gentle hint of smoky botrytis. White peach fruit essences and mineral salts animate the creamily rich yet delicate palate. More concentrated than the other ausleses at this address, in more of a BA style. But with its strong acidity, this impressive wine will mature into a great auslese.
Wine & Spirits
Hunkered down into itself, this feels compact and firm, the combination of super ripe green fruits dovetailing perfectly with earthy soil notes. A smoky note pervades the wine, complemented by a crisp herbal note that brings freshness to it. It feels like it could last a few decades, slowly giving more with each year.
Very creamy, rich and elegant, with luscious peach, apple compote and lemon cake flavors that feature hints of chamomile. Everything is in proportion, with notes of Key lime pie on the ethereal finish. Drink now through 2040.
This wine is unabashedly forward with sweet, juicy, stonefruit intensity, yet remarkably composed. Delicately structured, it’s anchored with piercing citrus acidity and a bristle of crushed-stone and slate minerality on the finish.
The wines of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr possess an excellent structure, show beautiful, ripe aromas and flavors (typically stone fruits, like peach), a fine minerality and great depth and length. Especially after having been aged for some years, their harmony, finesse and expression is unique. This Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese is a very classical Mosel Riesling Auslese, a fine yet racy wine, combining elegance and complexity and showing a beautiful balance between fruit aromas and flavors, a crisp acidity and fine minerality. Although this wine is very appealing now already, it will improve a lot with aging in the years to come and be enjoyable for decades. Weingut Joh. Jos. Prüm was founded in 1911 by Johann Josef Prüm . Today it is owned and managed by Dr. Manfred Prüm and his daughter Dr. Katharina Prüm. They focus solely on Riesling from famous sites like Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr and Bernkasteler Badstube. They are currently one of only nine wine estates in Germany ranked five stars by Gault Millau, which is the European wine world’s equivalent to the Michelin guide. Their Rieslings are renowned for their aging potential and are sought after by collectors. International Winery of the Year 2009 and 2010, Wine & Spirits Magazine.
