2009 Les Chancelieres Vouvray

SKU #1072522

A straightforward refreshing version of Vouvray Chenin Blanc. With a gold color, this wine is dry and smooth. It displays very nice citrus and fruity notes like ripe peach and green pear as well as flower aromas such as sweet acacia. The wine is round and fruity, well balanced and ends super fresh. A killer value in 100% Chenin Blanc. Picked from 45 year old vines and then vinified in stainless and then aged in tank for 2-3 months. Fantastic with fish dishes with an exotic flair and of course the typical meat and cheese starter plates.

This charming Vouvray comes to us as a direct import, making possible the attractive price ($11.99 for Vouvray?). Sourced from from various plots planted on calcareous soils within the Vouvray region, this 100% Chenin Blanc was produced by the venerable Cave de Producteurs de Vouvray cooperative, located just east of Tours in the "Vallée Coquette," between the villages of Rochecorbon and Vouvray. With such creamy, honeyed and fruity aromas on the nose and flavors of biscuit and lemon curd on the palate, the drying, mineral-accented finish comes as very refreshing surprise. This is just the thing for a get together with friends (especially if said get together involves a cheese plate featuring aged goat and the blue Fourme d'Ambert); the combination of fruit, body, acidity makes this wine a real crowd-pleaser!

I would be hard pressed to find as textbook a Vouvray as this wine here. It has all the classic markers: rich apple fruit, quince paste, stony mineral notes and glycerol mouth-coating richness. If you love Vouvray you can't beat this value and if you love rich chardonnays, give this a try. This coulb be that wonderful crossover wine you've been looking for.

Additional Information:

Chenin Blanc

- Also called Pineau de la Loire and Pineau d'Anjou. Chenin Blanc is an expressive white French varietal that makes beautiful dry, sweet and sparkling wines. Traditionally grown in the Loire Valley, the wines made from this varietal are typically labeled geographically. Vouvray Chenins are traditionally medium-sweet; Savennières Chenins are typically bright and crisp; Coteaux du Layon Chenins like Bonezeaux and Quarts de Chaume are among the world's most sought-after sweet wines, and the sparkling Chenins of Saumur are perfumed and delicious. What all of these iterations of the grape have in common is their ability to age, a gift bestowed upon them because of the grape's naturally high-acidity.

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. - Of all of the French wine producing regions, the Loire might produces the greatest variety of wines. They range from still to sparkling, very dry and acidic to hearty sweet, and clear in color to a deep purple. The diversity of wine produced in this region is due in part to its dynamic climate, which ranges from Continental to Mediterranean. This region is best known for Sauvignon blanc, Chenin blanc and Cabernet Franc. The most famous areas in the Loire Valley may be Sancerre and Vouvray.
