2009 Bodegas Puelles Blanco Rioja

SKU #1072521

Jesús Puelles is one of the most talented vignerons in Rioja. Hailing from a long line of vineyard worker/owners, Puelles knows the terruño in his little slice of land in the Rioja Alta town of Abalos. Most of the grapes for his red wines come from his own 20 hectares, which are north facing and located at 600 meters in altitude, affording the visitor with one of the most dramatically beautiful views of Rioja's main mountain ranges: the Sierra Cantabria mountains immediately to the north and the Sierra de la Demanda mountains to the south. This white wine consists primarily of viura, but also has some garnacha blanca, malvasia and chenin blanc in the blend. Bright, clean apple and citrus flavors combine with terrific minerality to make this perhaps one of the best young white Riojas I have tasted year to date. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish wine buyer)

After much anticipation, the Direct Imports that our esteemed Spanish buyer Joe Manekin unearthed on his trip to Spain this last spring are starting to arrive. This Rioja Blanco is a blend of Viura, Garnacha Blanca, Malvasia and Chenin Blanc all working together harmoniously to culminate in one of the better white Riojas I have had this year. Brilliant notes of citrus and core fruit, apples and pears, stroll gracefully over the palate alongside elegant minerality. What really set this wine apart for me was the sumptuous mouthfeel and texture that I believe comes from the Chenin Blanc in the blend. Soft and supple, this wine alongside butternut squash ravioli, or any type of baked-squash dish, and the aforementioned turkey, would show beautifully.

The most important red-wine-producing regions are Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Navarra in the north and Priorat and Penedes in the northeast.
