1979 Gonzalez Byass Palo Cortado Añada Jerez

SKU #1070645

Palo cortado is the most illusive style of sherry, having begun its life under a layer of flor which inexplicably disappears after a year or so and then continues its ageing oxidatively in the style of an oloroso. Therefore, good palo cortado retains the salty quality of an amontillado, while achieving the weight and glycerol driven richness of an oloroso. This one from Gonzalez Byass has an average age of approximately 30 years, 20 aged as vintage sherry and 10 in the "solera" system. All the grapes are from vineyards owned by González Byass in the "Jerez Superior" area. Roasted nuts, candied citrus fruits and dark caramel are just a few of the flavors you may pick up on this amazing elixir. I have tasted (and drunk) a lot of sherry - particularly in the past two years - and this one is easily in my top three, possibly the very best. It's one of the finest wines I have drunk yet. - With more land under vine than any other country in the world, Spain is the great sleeping wine giant. In recent years, a great deal of money and passion has been poured in the burgeoning Spanish wine industry, helping to improve quality among its vast array of wines from sparkling Cava to Sherry to Rioja Gran Reserva. The most important red-wine-producing regions are Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Navarra in the north and Priorat and Penedes in the northeast.
