Here's a spectacular new Chardonnay from Foley. Just over 4,000 cases were produced. It also received 4.5 stars from Restaurant Wine: "Fine Chardonnay: full bodied and elegantly flavored; a fleshy, well balanced, persistent wine, with layers of complexity, tasting of pear, lemon peel, vanilla, spicy oak, pineapple, and grapefruit. 95% barrel fermented. Aged 20 months in French oak barrels, 50% new."

Although this is not the first time we've worked with the Foley Chardonnay, it may be the first many of you have heard of this wine. Coming from a beautiful estate in the Santa Rita Hills, this 230-acre vineyard is home to some of the best Chardonnay and Pinot Noir the region has to offer. If you like richness of flavor, this may be your new summertime Chardonnay. While it is not the oakiest, or most buttery. it is tremendously delicious. Aromas of Fuji apple, marshmallow and vanilla bean lead you to believe that this may be a bit cumbersome at first, a sprinter trying to run a marathon, but that is far from the truth. Bright, modern flavors of Key lime pie, apple preserves and mango keep this humming along at a nice steady pace, allowing the pretty finish of clover, smoke and apple skin to make a push at the finish line.

- It's hard to believe that up until about 30 years ago, this extremely popular varietal hid behind the veil of geographical names like Chablis and Puligny-Montrachet. Now grown all over the world and bottled by its varietal name, Chardonnay has achieved a level of branding unlike any other wine. Surprisingly, though, what you get when you buy Chardonnay can differ greatly from country to country and even within one country, depending on the climate where it's grown and how it is vinified and aged. Santa Maria/Santa Barbara

- Santa Maria and Santa Ynez make up the two AVAs of Santa Barbara County, an area known for its natural beauty and temperate climate. The best grape-growing areas, however, are located on the very coastal reaches of these two appellations, and are cooled by ever-present fog and ocean breezes (it is even cooler and foggier here than Carneros!). As expected, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir thrive while the more inland zones lay claim to Bordeaux varietals and some Rhône blends.
