Lush, round and sweet, with ripe cassis and cherry preserve flavors offering impressive breadth. The sweet fruit is nicely complemented by tangy, smoky notes of black tea and iron. This supple, deeply fruity and slightly earthy wine struck me as a hybrid of Napa and Graves. Great value." According to the Wine Spectator: "A brawny red. This is an amazing wine, not only at this price, but at any price. Our Spanish/Portuguese Wine Buyer, Joe Manekin, was worried that most customers wouldn’t like it due to a very slight hint of “brett.” I pointed out to Joe that some of the great Burgundies have that same quality, and that I think that it actually adds to their complexity and greatness. Medium-deep ruby in color, the opulent nose is loaded with smoked sausage and wild game tones, with an iron-like graphite hint. In the mouth, this Gem is loaded with sweet blueberry to cranberry fruit that is flashy and bright. Moderately complex, the finish is long and meaty. Anderson has informed me that this will be one of our house reds for the month. 13% ABV. (Jim Barr)

This wine may not be for everyone, but if you love earthy, nuanced wines this could be the wine for you. Reminiscent of the Poggiarellino Rosso we carried a few years ago, this wine does have a touch of brettanomyces. It is full of blackberry jam, toasted brioche and marmite nuances. Serve with grilled merguez (spicy lamb) sausage.
