Clear Creek McCarthy's K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Oregon Single Malt Whiskey (750ml)

SKU #1062109

We rely on our relationships and our ingenuity to help locate new barrels and now we’ve tapped one of our most beloved producers, Clear Creek’s Steve McCarthy, for our latest acquisition. Most people associate Oregon’s finest distillery with fruit-based products and rightly so - his mouthwatering Cranberry Liqueur was perhaps the best-selling product we had during our last holiday season. What many do not know, however, is that every Fall he releases a very small amount of an Islay-style, heavily-peated single malt whiskey aged in local Oregon oak. His 100% barley distilled spirit has been legendary among those in the know for more than a decade – even featured in the late Michael Jackson’s indispensable encyclopedia Whiskey. Small allocations are sent out world-wide and they are quickly snatched up by those anxiously awaiting. This will be the first time that Steve McCarthy has ever bottled a single barrel cask strength whiskey for any retailer and it is only for K&L customers! His smoky, salty, iodine and pepper-filled dram is reminiscent of young Laphroaig, but with hints of Ardbeg and Lagavulin. It is truly the long lost child of Islay that was switched at birth and instead grew up on the Oregon coast. - David Driscoll, K&L Spirits Buyer

This is a difficult whisky for some to understand, but it is certainly one of the finest young malts being produced in the US. The Spirits Journal has rated the 85 proof sister cask of our K&L Exclusive 4 out 5 stars(Dec 20th, Vol 20, Issue 4 No. 99), while Jim Murray has rated it 96 pts in the past. I'm convinced that if they tasted our exclusive cask strength version they'd be even more impressed. It is certainly not Laphroaig, but then again NOTHING is like Laphroaig. The barley is peated in Scotland and expertly distilled in Steve Mccarthy's small pot still. The peatiness is moderate, but can be coaxed out with a drop of water and some aeration in the glass. Hay, barnyard, and sweet malt are expressed on the nose, while the palate starts with a touch of peat and goes salty all the way back. IN my opinion the is one of the most DRINKABLE, young American Single Malts available at any price.

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world. - Highly touted for its Pinot Noirs, Oregon is part of the up-and-coming winemaking industry in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Most of Oregon is directly affected by the climate coming off of the Pacific Ocean, giving it mild winters and wet summers. This makes it a difficult place to ripen grapes, but some say that the harder grapes have to struggle, the more complex they will turn out to be. Chardonnay and Pinot Gris are two important and successful grapes grown in Oregon.
