Charles Heidsieck "Rosé Reserve" Brut Champagne (Previously $70.00)
Richly toasty and creamy in texture, with finely honed acidity lending a mouthwatering impression to lightly honeyed flavors of crème de cassis, toasted brioche, golden raisin, lemon curd and roasted almond. Offers a long, spiced finish. Drink now through 2024.
With its onion-skin color, this already shows age. The palate, with its mature reflection and beautiful rounded texture, confirms this. Rich, well balanced and gently mature, it has retained enough red fruits to keep an element of freshness. It is a food wine, rich and full in the mouth.
(one-third each Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier; 11 g/l dosage; L130297 3835): Light, bright orange. Intensely perfumed scents of raspberry, orange zest, white flowers and chalky minerals. Juicy and precise in the mouth, offering vibrant red berry and blood orange flavors and a complicating hint of brioche. The floral quality comes back strong on the very long, incisive finish, which features a subtle anise quality and smoky minerality. About 20% of the Pinot Noir here was in the form of still red wine. Showing plenty of fruity volume and combining lots of autolysis with a strong sense of vinosity, this is a real Rosé in every sense of the word. It is firmly balanced and charged by a fine, lasting mousse, and its modest trim of back-palate astringency never interferes with is message of very vital, faintly cherry-like fruit. While it can be enjoyed with lighter foods, it will serve just as well on its own, and its commendable vitality trumps the need for hasty drinking.
Very pale pink. Same assemblage of the 2007 as the white but 20% reserve wines - younger ones, 5-10 years old. 5-6% still reds from the Montagne de Reims. Trying for delicacy. Want it to be a wine that will age. Quite complex. Dry finish and really quite broad and serious on the palate. (17/20 points)
