2005 Saint Genès, Premières Cotes de Blaye

SKU #1059941

89 points Robert Parker: "Owner Bernard Magrez has fashioned a 76% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Malbec blend that is a noteworthy sleeper of the vintage. Sweet currant and cherry fruit intermixed with aromas of sandalwood, loamy soil, spice, and earth jump from the glass of this ripe, heady, medium-bodied, silky smooth 2005. Consume it over the next 3-4 years." (08/08) K&L's notes - Superb wine from this great vintage. One of the rising star regions of Bordeaux that produces good value wines. Just east of the Dordogne, Blaye is hope to many rising star Bordeaux

This is my kind of Bordeaux: easy drinking! If I might quote the winemaker Bernard Magrez: "I have devoted my undivided attention to this outstanding wine." And I have devoted my undivided attention to in drinking it. Try it with some grilled lamb chops; you won't be disappointed!

This is from the owner of the great Chateau Pape-Clement and won a Gold medal at the Concours General Agricole in France. Ripe Cherry, chocolate, dark currant and spice come together in this smooth bargain. This is dark and rich and shows the greatness of the 2005 vintage.

This is the first of the two value-priced wines we just received from Bernard Magrez (the owner of Pape-Clément and La Tour Carnet). It’s made from 76% Merlot, 22% Cab and 2% Malbec from the great 2005 vintage. On the nose the cherry and plum fruit dominates, while the palate shows good structure and acidity with lots more cherry and plum fruit.

The 05 Saint Genes shows upfront black fruit, anise, and oak spice notes. It is round and rich, but herb accents add complexity. From the stellar 05 vintage, this is wine is structured but ready to drink.

For drinkable Bordeaux in the $10 to $20 range the 2005 vintage is still the one to beat. And why try while there is still wine available? This 2005 Chateau St. Genes from Bernard Magrez is a recent arrival and a terrific choice for anyone looking for an everyday red to drink tonight. All that wonderful '05 dark fruit. Sweet black fruits, cherry and plum. Round and soft-textured. Terrific size and weight. A superb value.

- A very popular red grape variety found in the great wines of St. Emilion and Pomerol. It is the most planted variety in Bordeaux, and it has also become an extremely fashionable red in many regions including California. Although it has a reputation to be smooth, and easy to drink when young, Merlot is also capable of producing extremely intense wines as well. It is often used as a blending agent with Cabernet Sauvignon.
