Michel Loriot "Authentic" Brut Champagne

SKU #1059506 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Light yellow-gold. Intensely perfumed aromas of pear skin, melon, redcurrant and anise, with mineral and buttered toast accents. Deeply pitched orchard and pit fruit and red berry flavors are brightened by tangy acidity and pick up smokiness with air. Powerful but light on its feet, finishing with good thrust and lingering floral and spice qualities. (JR) (12/2012)

K&L Notes

This all-estate grown Champagne is 100% Pinot Meunier from the village of Festigny. Unlike many "reserve" designation Champagnes, this lives up to its name with half of the wine coming from old reserves. It is quite round, with a wonderful pie crust and spice nose, with some hints of exotic fruit in the flavor. This is medium- to full-bodied Champagne and makes great drinking on its own as well as being fantastic with patés of all sorts. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer)

Loriot's non-vintage "Authentic Brut Champagne" consists of 100% Pinot Meunier that shows delicate notes of yellow orchard fruits and pie crust. It's low in alcohol, weighty on the palate and is about to run out of stock. Jam on in here for a couple before they disappear.

People often look at you quizzically when you talk about Meunier. Indeed, it's lost in the sea of blanc de blancs and even in Champagne it's widely considered the third tier grape. But done correctly, with the right vineyards and proper care, Meunier produces something altogether unique and utterly fascinating. Loriot is a true specialist of the grape and their entry level offering provides the perfect example of the unique capacities of this special varietal. Big bold tropical fruit, unlike anything chardonnay or pinot could ever produce. Aromas of guava and pineapple and a beautiful golden hue. The palate is really fresh and clean, with those exotic fruits still taking front seat and despite the low dosage a wonderful balance of sweetness and acidity. Top value for those who don't want the same old thing.

I'm a cool guy! I think the record is clear on that. As such, it should come to no surprise that my Friday night this week was spent curled up with re-runs of "ANTQUES ROADSHOW". Yeah - we can't all be me. Surprisingly, this episode seemed to be dominated by pieces of Victorian art that were in fact revealed to be AUTHENTIC! Yeah, maybe they were, but after drinking this bottle from Michel Loriot, I have decided that the term AUTHENTIC shall now exclusively be used to describe this champagne. IT IS THAT GOOD! Unlike most of the guests on this week's episode, this wine is RICH. It is COMPLEX! It is laden with tangy and crisp acidity which leads you through a myriad of smoke and creamy vanilla! It is a value that is simply remarkable!

It won't be here for long, so stock up on the best deal in Direct Import Champagne while it lasts! This is the perfect fall-holiday bubbly because it has a fuller, moussey texture and mouthfeel because of the Pinot Meunier fruit and toasted hazelnuts with wild berries on the finish.

This generous, toasty, fun bottle of Champagne is so easy to drink! Underneath the easy going charm, the Michel Loriot Authentic has a surprising amount of substance, coming entirely from estate grown Meunier that is aged three years on the lees and treated to 50% reserve wine. If you like the rich, round, toasty, full bodied style with a dry finish, you have found the winner!

"You had me at Meunier..." So rare to have a chance to enjoy Champagne that is 100% Pinot Meunier. As if that weren't enough, this is one of the few non-vintage cuvees we sell that is more than 50% reserve wine. Oh, and at less than $30 one of the best deals among our directly imported grower producer Champagnes. Still not sold on this one? Each bottle is sealed with genuine 16k gold foil. OK. That's not actually true. But everything else, you bet. What are you waiting for?

An absolute steal for under $30. This bottle is 100% Meunier and all estate grown fruit. The nose is aromatic with pure fruit and minerality. The palate shows exotic fruits and tangy red berries with a full body and clean zippy bubbles. With air a little earth and smoke shows through. The "Authentic" just has so much complexity, what a value!

Exceptional quality for the money. Remarkably soft and elegant considering that the wine goes through no malo. Ripe orchard fruit and some softer stone fruit elements. Creamy lees texture and great persistence on the palate. One of our best values in all of Champagne.

Apple, pie crust toastiness, chalky minerality with a beautiful, persistent bead and balanced acidity. This is the real deal, folks. I love this 100% Meunier, insanely affordable Champagne! Thank you, Gary Westby!

Exotic spice, tropical fruit and ripe citrus notes give this cuvee a fresh lifted air, but it stays true to its Meunier roots with a richness that keeps this champagne from being too angular.

The Loriot cuvee reserve is showing just wonderfully right now. Aromatically, this is definitely on the spicy and appley side of Meunier based champagne, but with a crisp, bright quality (this wine does not go through malolactic). Soft bead, mouthwateringly delicious fruit, great style, what else could you ask for in a Champagne at this price? Without a doubt, this is one of my favorites in the store right now.

This has become my favorite bargain DI Champagne. Round on the palate with that exotic fruit that you get from Pinot Meunier. It is yeasty in a doughy/cookie way with just a touch of spice.

Produced totally from Pinot Meunier, this outstanding Champagne, a recent Gary Westby find, offers incredible richness and lushness both on its doughy, yeasty, nutty, and spicy perfumed nose and across its viscous, complex, well-focused palate. With all this Gem’s depth of flavor, it is still amazingly balanced with superb structure and length. You get a gondola full of great Champagne, here, for a ridiculously reasonable price. I would put this up against any of named Champagnes that are selling for $75.00 or more a bottle. The Guys (Anderson, Eby, The Beaner, and Rizzo) have informed me that this Gem will be our house Champagne for the holidays. 12.0% ABV
Drink from 2011 to 2020

I love this Champagne! It is distinctive and crowd-pleasing all at once. Made from 100% Pinot Meunier, this Champagne opens with a nose of pear and apple, which leads to a leesy palate and creamy, mouth-filling mousse and long, mineral-driven finish accented by a pleasing nutty spice. I have been a fan of this Champagne since it first arrived a year ago and it continues to impress me. It was a pleasure to meet the Loriots at our recent Champagne Tent event in Redwood City; I echo my colleages in my praise of this Champagne. It is a stunning bottle for the price.

A wonderful Champagne that is made from 100% Pinot Meunier grapes. It is medium bodied but has a nice roundness and subtle hint of nuts. The Loriot Reserve is dry and could be enjoyed alone or with lighter foods.I like this Champagne very much and am glad that we sell it at K&L.

Oh so rich and spicy, and yet refined and delicate. How do they do this? Plenty of dried cherry notes but quite complex in flavor due to the reserve cuvées used to make this delicious Champagne. A perfect example of a champagne that would go absolutely great throughout a dinner. From start to finish!

This bottle of bubbly delivers two fold, its palate brings fresh apples and rich nuttiness, not often found in the same bottle of champagne, with an elegant mouth feel and a lilting hint of spice. Then, it plays into my inner wine nerd by being one hundred percent estate grown Meunier! I love being able to taste a pure form of a certainly utilized grape, it really gives a shining example of what is this grape is capable of if treated with respect and an understanding wine makers hand.

Nutty richness right off the bat and plenty of acidity to balance it out. We've got another fantastic directly imported Champagne on our hands! At this price, I can see myself drinking Loriot into the new year and beyond. Tasty tasty wine that should appeal to those who like it crisp and those who like a bit more body - which is pretty much everyone!
