I wrote a month or so back saying I just wasn't a huge fan of California Chardonnays, then recanted and mentioned a number of producers that I actually really do like. Now I remember why David Ramey was among them. We tasted the whole line up of his current release Chards the other evening and while all were very well made and stylistically very appealing, the 2007 Hyde was magical, a stunning example of this varietal from California. There was a crystaline purity that showed a core of tropical fruit, but not a ripe fruit, more of an intense "essence" of fruit. It had a piercing minerality that was unusual, and while the oak was apparent (60% new French), it didn't mar the purity at all, but complimented it beautifully (also unusual). All that said, make no mistake, this is a crafted wine, not a testament to non-intervention. The hand of the winemaker is evident no doubt, but David Ramey is an expert at his craft, and the resulting wine is an amazing achievement. Bravo David!
