2008 Quinta da Aveleda Vinho Verde

SKU #1056502

90 points Wines & Spirts: "Lean and focused as a young wine, this is packed with fruit and mineral flavors. Spend some time with the wine and you might find orange blossom, lemon and lime pith, peach skin and smoky minerality. The tartness will round out with a few months of bottle age. For any fruits de mer." (8/09) 90 points and a "Best Buy" Wine Enthusiast: "From Aveleda’s home estate, this is quintessential dry Vinho Verde with a delicious burst of citric freshness lifted by a texture that has a light prickle. It bounces from the glass, crisp and refreshing." (12/15/09) There is nothing like a slightly fizzy, lime tinged, low alcohol vinho verde to kick spring into high gear. Quinta da Aveleda is a quite large, family owned producer of vinho verde, and one of the very best, consistently making delicious tasting white wine from a blend of trajadura, Loureiro, alvarinho and other indigenous varieties, all grown on their own 160 hectares. Drink this with or without food, though it is undoubtedly tough to beat when enjoyed outdoors in warm, sunny weather.

Notes of citrus and minerals paired with a slight fizz lead to an easy drinking wine that pairs perfectly with seafood or salad. Bright, crisp and refreshing, sure to be a hit anytime.

Vinho Verde is not a wine that you retreat to your study, home office or wherever in the middle of the night to contemplate the shadows and lucubrate over. It is chiefly a wine of pure, radiant sunlight, impulsive spontaneity and 'joie de vivre', or whatever the equivalent phrase is in Portuguese. Quinta Aveleda has, by carefully blending the traditional Portuguese VV varietals, pretty much captured the essence of this special summer conceit. Festive seafood-friendly salads and fresh shellfish will rise to the task, but you can enjoy it's shimmering lime-laden effervescence on its own.
