1999 The Royal Tokaji Wine Company Mezes Mály 6 Puttonyos 500ml

SKU #1056349 95 points Wine Spectator

A touch of new oak rounds this out, and attractive grassy, herbal notes add an edge to the apricot, marmalade and stone flavors. Beautifully balanced and succulent, with a long light-weight and saturated finish. Furmint, Hárslevelü and Muscat. Drink now through 2035. 215 cases made. (6/2008)

94 points Wine Enthusiast

This exuberant Tokaji starts with an enticing nose of orange peel, honey, flowers and toast, and explodes in the mouth with intense, delicious waves of lemon, orange and honey flavors. A perfect balance of acid and fruit keeps the wine fresh without losing its luscious appeal. A memorable wine loaded with personality and excitement. (5/2009)

93 points Wine & Spirits

From a vineyard of loess soils classified as a Great First Growth, this is always the most sumptuous wine in RTWC's range, and the 1999 is no exception. It smells of peaches in late summer, laden with sweetness but with just-picked freshness; of lightly candied orange rinds just beginning their trip into marmalade territory. Its great, honeyed sweetness wraps around tremendous acidity that keeps it clean and vibrant. Enjoyable now, although it ought to last for decades in the cellar with ease. (2/2010)

Jancis Robinson

Tawny/copper colour, this single vineyard marvel with 9% alcohol (if my notes are to be believed), 12.9 TA and 235g/l RS ie almost a quarter of the volume is made up of sugar. The nose is slightly reminiscent of dusty velour and macerated raisins. The acidity really is a knockout! There are strong dried apricots here and that apple skin aroma too. It is such a baby... only 2,000 bottles made. One to lay down for the next generation? (7/2008)

K&L Notes

Mezes Maly, in the Tarcal commune of Hungary, had the distinction of being classified as one of only two vineyards to be elevated to the equivalent of Great 1st growth in the Rakoczi classification of 1700. Situated on loess soil on a south facing slope, this famous vineyard is now enjoying a renaissance of its own. Mezes Maly's characteristics are based around its translation as 'honey pot'. It's incredibly long and exquisitely balanced aromas and flavours combine the very essence of aszu wines.

Other White Wines

- Better known for its paprika than its wine, Hungary is nonetheless one of Eastern Europe's most significant wine-producing countries. Exerjo, Furmint, Hárslevelü and Mezesfeher are just some of the indigenous (and unpronounceable!) varieties most widely planted. And Tokaji is Hungary's biggest success story. Made since the sixteenth century, Tokaji is an extremely sweet wine that was adored by the Russian Tsars. It is made in a manner similar to Sherry, and is reputed to be the longest lived, non-fortified wine in existence (a few hundred years is not unheard of). Hungary's continental climate--predictably cold winters and hot summers--makes it an ideal location for Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon as well.
