2006 Umathum "Frauenkirchen vom Stein" St. Laurent Burganland (Previously $63)

SKU #1054704 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The Umathum 2006 St. Laurent - vinified in tank and then matured in fuder - (displays) the black cherry fruit, humus-like notes, and polished texture that typify many of the better wines of this variety. Herbal, rose hip, and stony notes chime in on a satisfyingly lingering finish of a wine suited for 2-3 years of bottle evolution. (2/2009)

K&L Notes

The oldest vineyard in the villages of Frauenkirchen, "vom Stein" has light and permeable soils full of gravel and quartz. The wine spends 15 months in barrels, and is bottled without filtration. Dark red, with aromas of cherries and citrus peel and hints of savory spices and woody herbs, the palate is full of spiced cherry, dense blackberry and clove with a dense finish of silky tannins. A fantastic match for game and roasted lamb dishes. 12.5% abv.

- Austria is a well-respected wine-growing region in Europe. Yet, even though they make about a third the volume of wine as Germany, not many of these fine bottles make it to the shelves of American wine merchants or restaurants. Lucky for us, their anonymity has translated into incredible value from simple, everyday whites to exquisite dessert wines. Austria shares many grape varieties with Germany—Riesling is king here, too. But the style of Austrian whites is much dryer and more potent. Grüner Veltliner is Austria's second-most-important varietal and makes whites of great versatility and pleasure. Click for a list of bestselling items from Austria.
