2006 Casa Santos Lima "Palha Canas" Estremadura

SKU #1054314

Sometimes, a wine value hits you from far afield. In this case, the value has landed from far away in the Estremadura region south of Lisbon, Portugal. My tasting notes read: "Real terroir! $10 retail???" For $10 this is an outrageously satisfying bottle of wine, full of intense cherry fruit flavors, hoisin sauce, minerals, and a hint of a sauvage, leathery quality. Given its hearty character, it is delicious, gulpable stuff, without sacrificing complexity or balance. On alternate sips, the wine brought to mind both the golden era of rustic Southern French values, as well as the satisfying acidic bite of Brunello. Produced from Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Trincadeira grapes grown in clay and limestone soil with an Atlantic tempered climate. I'd say that this is delicious for well north of $9.99, but for $10 it's a Portuguese steal. (Joe Manekin, K&L Portuguese wine buyer)
