Each year, the enterprising Denis Barraud finds some new parcels he can get, generally in metayage (share-cropping). This is a single vineyard, and that rarity in Burgundy, a monopole, which Denis has direct control over. It is just over one acre in size (.45Ha). This wine has more drive and energy than the Les Folles or Chataigniers, and also more evident minerality. It is vinified entirely in small oak barrels, from 5-10 years in age. The leesiness of the wine seems to be almost oaky in its richness, but the old barrels are certainly neutral. There is a terrific amount of wine here for the money! The 08 "Clos de la Combe Poncet" from Denis Barraud is one of the rounder and more expressive of the lot. It sees more time on the lees and less new wood. Savory cream/lees and mushroom notes waft from the glass; the palate is minerally and rich but supported by high acidity. A very intriguing wine that needs food -it would be amazing with a rich mushroom bisque or savory chicken dish with cream sauce.

- It's hard to believe that up until about 30 years ago, this extremely popular varietal hid behind the veil of geographical names like Chablis and Puligny-Montrachet. Now grown all over the world and bottled by its varietal name, Chardonnay has achieved a level of branding unlike any other wine.
