2008 Barber Cellars "Lazarie" Dry Creek Valley Sauvignon Blanc

Elegant and affordable, this is a delicious white wine from a small producer. Definitely Sancerre-like in its structure, the wine has subtle flavors of grapefruit, lemon, and green apple backed up with fresh acidity, a floral nose, low alcohol, and a long finish. 2008 was a great year in Sonoma for white wines and Dry Creek Valley is a perfect AVA for Sauvignon Blanc production. The 2008 'Lazarie" is a soft and beautiful wine from a single block of Handley's sustainably farmed Dry Creek Valley vineyard. It was aged 5 months on the lees for added minerality and then bottled unfiltered with as little sulfite as possible. From the Wine Enthusiast: "Barber has produced a young, vigorous and polished Sauvignon Blanc. It's fully dry and crisp in acidity, showing flavors of apples, grapefruits, kiwis, vanilla and white pepper. A very nice, versatile white wine, at a good price." (12/09)

Given my abiding love for the chalky, mineral-rich wines of Sancerre, I rarely encounter a domestic Sauvignon Blanc that really expresses the varietal character of this youthful, vivacious grape, but I have to throw in my beret, er, baseball cap, for the remarkable version from Barber Cellars. Mike Barber's wine ethics are pure and fastidious and complete, and he draws everything into a beam of citrine light and mineral integrity in his second vintage of Lazarie. If you love Sancerre as much as I do and fail to try this lovely wine, well…..

This microscopic production (400 cases) Dry Creek Sauvignon blanc is a California version of a Sancerre. From a single block of Handley's sustainably farmed vineyard,this is dry and fresh with flavors of green apple, lemon and grapefruit. Floral notes and a bracing minerality add complexity to this versitile wine.

Well, it looks like Mike "Babs" Barber did it again (with the help of his lovely wife, of course!). His second vintage of sauvignon blanc has the hallmarks of his first....a dry, almost Sancerre style with a hint of nuttiness. On the palate, grapefruit, granny smith apples and toasted almonds. Lingering finish. A great alternative to fruity or grassy sauvignon blancs. Just think of it as U.S. Sancerre! Wonderful with custaceans or fish!

This has got to be my favorite domestic Sauvignon Blanc in stock at this time. This SB has aromas of citrus and melon that make one want to know more about this wine. In the mouth, the Lazarie is soft, with round citrus and melon flavors and a delicious, slight mineral background. The Lazarie ends up nice and dry and is great alone or with fish or fowl.

Sauvignon Blanc

- One of the best known "international" varieties originally cultivated in France and considered the parent of, with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon. Sauvignon's wonderfully distinctive aromatics generate some of wine's most colorful descriptors, among them "cat pee," herbaceous, grassy, citrusy the world over. In France, the apex of Sauvignon Blanc production is the Loire Valley, in the appellations of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, where the terroir expresses itself most beautifully through the grape. Sauvignon Blanc is also the leading white grape varietal in Bordeaux, where it is paired with the fatter, richer Sémillon to varying degrees. Relatively easy to cultivate, though more suited to cool climates, Sauvignon Blanc has made inroads in Europe outside of France, especially in Northeastern Italy's Friuli and Alto Adige, but also on the Slovenian border. These lovely wines are often overshadowed by Sauvignon Blanc's achievements in the New World, namely New Zealand, South Africa and California. New Zealand's Sauvignon Blancs, more conspicuously fruity than most French examples, landed the small island nation on the world wine map in the late-1980s and 1990s. South African Sauvignons are one of the most successful international varieties produced in that country and are often quite elegant and affordable. In California, Robert Mondavi managed to, almost single-handedly, created a market for Sauvignon Blanc by renaming his oak-fermented version Fumé Blanc. While some wineries still use the name, California Sauvignon Blanc has secured its place in the California wine pantheon, particularly those from the Napa Valley. Washington State, Chile and Argentina also have considerable plantings of the grape.

- Second in fame only to Napa, this "other" valley offers just about every climate and topography imaginable.
