 Deep ruby with a bright rim. Sexy, expressive aromas of red and dark berries, incense, Asian spices and cola. The red berry quality dominates the palate, gaining complexity from notes of clove, rose pastille and sassafras and taking on a building spiciness on the finish.  Comparing the 2006 Pintia to the 2004 and 2005, this is the one that has the most exuberance with generous cassis and black currant aromas. Initially, you suspect that it might be a touch over-ripe, but it calms down in the glass and becomes more refined. The palate is full-bodied with ripe, succulent tannins. This is very fleshy, a Pintia with more volume than its predecessors, although I am more taken with the delineation and tension demonstrated by the previous vintage. (NM)  (4/2013)

 A big, modern-style contender with burly berry, lemon, coconut, dill and blackberry on the bouquet. Lush and cushioned in the mouth, with meaty, dark flavors of roasted blackberry, espresso and fudge. Chewy and dense on the finale, but not overly hard or tannic.  (12/2011)

 Vega-Sicilia established itself in Toro in 1997, and in 2001 started the production of Pintia, its first venture outside of Ribera del Duero. This latest vintage is voluptuous and ripe, round and meaty in texture and surrounded by flavors of fig, chestnuts and nuts in decadent juiciness.  (6/2011)

Toro, located slightly upstream from Ribera del Duero, is known for big, bold fruity reds based on a variation of Tempranillo known as "tinto del pais." Vines are very old in this region, often exceeding 80 years of age. While wines like Termanthia receive big points and critical attention, the Pintia is more elegant, right in line with Vega Sicilia's approach; drink it young for its power and youth, or age - the wine should drink terrifically for at least a decade. This is another ideal way to familiarize yourself with Vega Sicilia's wines without feeling too extravagant.

- A very important red grape varietal that's native to Northern Spain, grown across the north and central regions of the country. Low in acid and alcohol, with subtle strawberry, leather and tobacco notes, the grape responds well to oak aging and plays particularly well with others. Tempranillo is an important component, when combined with Garnacha, Mazuelo, Viura and Graciano, of Rioja, with the best examples coming for the cooler, higher-elevation regions like Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. It is also grown in significant quantities in the Ribera del Duero where it is called Tinto Fino and Penèdes where it is called Ull de Llebre o Ojo de Llebre. Tempranillo hasn't gained a particularly strong foothold outside of Spain, achieving some success under the name Tinto Roriz in Portugal. There it is used as a component of Port and in the table wines of the Ribera del Duero and the Dão.
