2007 Delas "St-Esprit" Côtes du Rhône

SKU #1043548

90 points Robert Parker. "The amazing 2007 Cotes du Rhone St.-Esprit (75% Syrah and 25% Grenache) reveals a northern Rhone orientation, but it is loaded with spice and black fruits, and displays a beautiful opulent texture as well as a gorgeous finish with impressive purity. Chateauneuf du Pape has also benefitted from the new attention to detail and upgraded quality. The good news is that there are about 1,500 cases of this cuvee. This great northern Rhone negociant, spearheaded by their brilliant oenologist and winemaker, Jacques Grange, has consistently made fabulous wines from the northern appellations, but only recently upgraded the quality of their southern Rhone selections. These are the finest southern Rhones they make, and their Cotes du Rhone St.-Esprit ranks alongside the offerings from Guigal and Chapoutier." (10/08). Robert Parker calls 2007 "...the vintage of a lifetime." According to Wine & Spirits: "Sweet, succulent black cherry and plum flavors meet spice and lily notes. A simple, gulpable Syrah for roast chicken." (02/09) 13.5% abv.

The fact that there is wine of this quality available under $10 is just hilarious. I'm buying this by the case.

Reviewed quite nicely, but not what I was hoping for. Very dry, with herbal flavors, sometimes actually bitter. Has some very nice notes, and may go well with certain foods, but as a drinking wine, it was just OK.

Blueberry nose, hints of iron earth and spice set off the full-fruited medium bodied wine with light tannin. This is excellent stuff for the price!

Medium-bodied with light tannins, berry and spice - a delicious wine! Much preferred this to the Perrin et Fils Côtes du Rhône Réserve and Côtes du Rhône-Villages.

My wife and I are still acquiring our tastes for French wines but we are big fans of this Rhone. We've taken bottles of this to dinners at friends with more refined tastes for French and we've always gotten great compliments. Great wine at a great price.

Really tasty glass of blueberries with vanilla & coffee in the back. At $9.99 it is a bargain. Unlike most Cotes du Rhone it is based on Syrah rather than Grenache.

This is a fruit bomb made from an awesome vintage, but is not my style. I prefer more earthy tones and restraint. Luckily, there are 30+ killer values from 2007 Rhones that I have to choose from at K&L! (See my other reviews.)

Rhone Blends

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Click for a list of bestselling items from all of France.

- Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
