2007 Domaine des Nembrets Denis Barraud Pouilly-Fuissé "Les Chataigniers"

One of our favorite producers is Denis Barraud, who runs the Domaine des Nembrets. This cuvée comes from his estate vineyards on the slopes of the Roche de Vergisson, a giant basalt monolith, surrounded by complex and folded rocky, well-drained soils with limestone outcroppings. It is bright and fresh, generous and open, but shows a continuous thread of mineral and spice, with an attractive rich and lovely lemon-cream note. The hint of toasty oak and leesiness make it open and generous, and complement the focus of the wine. (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgundy Buyer)

For those who have given up on Chardonnay it may be time to return to the varietal's roots, so to speak, and try some of the great white wines from Burgundy. 2007 was an exceptional vintage for white Burgundy and this Pouilly Fuisse is no exception. Intriguingly spicy oak, bracingly mineral character, tart citrus notes, rich texture. 100% Chardonnay, a great vintage, and a great buy at under $20. What's not to like?

Drinking very well right now. Definitely a richer, more barrel influenced style than the Renaud Pouilly-Fuisse, but I do occasionally enjoy the fleshy fruit flavors and added richness. This wine has really come around nicely in the past eight months or so.

2007 white Burgundies in the under $30 category are well worth your time and money. I enjoyed the "Les Chataigniers" recently with a simple dish of roast chicken, braised leeks, and asparagus. This is a medium-bodied wine with defined acidiy and minerality, and classic lemon and lees flavors. The oak plays a supporting role, adding complexity and a little spice. Excellent dining companion!

This is a cuvée from several of Nembret's estate vineyards. This wine sees a small percentage new oak, and is a serious wine for an extremely reasonable price. What is immediately noticeable is the wine's minerality; starting on the nose it resonates thoughout the wine, especially on its vibrant finish! The palate is modestly generous with plenty of lemon and stone fruit tones that seemed to be etched into the wine. The touch of oak gives a hint of spice, and there is a slight creaminess that adds depth and richness. This wine over-performs for the price!

This is sophisticated white Burgundy that hasn't forgot how to be a good time. This Pouilly-Fuisse has the classic flint and haunting, elusive fruit that I look for in good wines from Macon, but a lot more complexity than I would expect from this region- especially at $19.99. I think this is a must try for any fan of white Burgundy, even if you are lucky enough to be accustomed to Puligny and Chassagne. For that matter, I think it is a must try for any fan of Chardonnay. The minerality and persistence of this wine are truly impressive, and the richness and pure fruit are a lot of fun- I hope you will try it!

Denis Barraud's 2007s have all proven to show a great core of fruit, with clear, precise flavors. While the "La Roche" may be my favorite this year, the "Les Chataigniers" is lovely with aromas of lemon blossom, peach and mineral accents. On the palate, the wine has a chiseled flavor detail with fine balance and length.

All of the whites in stock from Nembrets right now are very, very good and real bargains, if you ask me. I am focusing on the Charaignieres because I feel it is the most impressive of the lot, but this review is intended to bring attention to all of the bottles we currently have. You could close your eyes and pick one blindly and still come out on top. The Pouilly Fuisse is full of limestone, tons of depth, and is long and round on the finish. Yummy.

- It's hard to believe that up until about 30 years ago, this extremely popular varietal hid behind the veil of geographical names like Chablis and Puligny-Montrachet. Now grown all over the world and bottled by its varietal name, Chardonnay has achieved a level of branding unlike any other wine.
