This Champagne is a blend of 50% Pinot Noir and 50% Chardonnay from organic, estate vineyards. Mr. Brulez sells two-thirds of his grapes, and keeps the best third to make only vintage Champagne. He is the chairman of the Dijon University Alumni Association, and looks more to Burgundy than to Reims for inspiration. One of my top quality-to-price picks for the entire Champagne department, this wine has it all. It has a very pale straw color and the generous aromatics remind me of many of the great 1990 Champagnes when they were young. It has aromas of sourdough, white flowers and a distinct, bright chalkiness. Tasting it with our staff, everyone was surprised that it was 50/50 Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, since the mineral-driven white fruit dominate the wine so much now. The texture is perfect: medium to light and the essence of balance. The finish is very, very long. I still taste it as I type. Better yet? This wine should keep for more than a decade. A lot of good things have been said about the 2002 vintage, and tasting this one confirms them all. This is a special bottle, with both the richness of the Aube and a mineral cut that completes and balance the wine. This wine should age very well - Cinnamon and I just drank the 1992 with Gougeres at a friends house, and it is as fresh as a current release at 17 years old.

I usually have a hard time identifying "potential" in Champagne, deferring to an expert like Gary Westby. But with the 2002 Louise Brison I finally got it: this 80/20 blend of pinot and chardonnay is a bit muted on the nose right now, but with some air it revealed elegant fruit and came across the palate as wonderfully complex, comparable to the 1985s. Buy this and stick it in your cellar; you won't regret it.

Compared with Brison's other Champagnes, there is a similar richness, roundness and persistence here, though with more pronounced acidity. Tasted a second time, the acidity really jumped out even more, in a good way. I like this quite a bit; it will probably be my house Champagne for when the occasion calls for a good quality bubbly.
