1996 The Royal Tokaji Wine Company Mezes Mály 6 Puttonyos

SKU #1035722 92 points Wine Spectator

Distinctive wine. With its resiny element, the aroma reminds me of an antique shop. On the palate, it's fresh and focused, with marmalade and mineral flavors. Medium-bodied and more rustic in style than its peers, yet with personality and intensity. Drink now through 2015. (6/2004)

90 points Wine & Spirits

The vines for this wine were only 12 years old in 1996, yet they gave a wine that's plush with flavor, all candied kumquat, golden raisins, apricots and orange-blossom honey. Laden with spice, this has a rummy feel, warming and dark, for winter drinking. (2/2010)

Additional Information:

- Better known for its paprika than its wine, Hungary is nonetheless one of Eastern Europe's most significant wine-producing countries. Exerjo, Furmint, Hárslevelü and Mezesfeher are just some of the indigenous (and unpronounceable!) varieties most widely planted. And Tokaji is Hungary's biggest success story. Made since the sixteenth century, Tokaji is an extremely sweet wine that was adored by the Russian Tsars. It is made in a manner similar to Sherry, and is reputed to be the longest lived, non-fortified wine in existence (a few hundred years is not unheard of). Hungary's continental climate--predictably cold winters and hot summers--makes it an ideal location for Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon as well.
