1997 Lopez de Heredia "Vina Tondonia" Crianza Rosado Rioja, Spain

SKU #1033807

Produced from 60% garnacha, 20% tempranillo and 20% viura. This is the current rosé, just released in spring 2007! A must try, love-it-or leave-it style. I find this wine a little, dare I say, young. A beautiful coppery color, this is traditional Rioja rosado at its best. (Joe Manekin, K&L Wines) 91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Copper-tinged pink. Smoky redcurrant and dried cherry aromas are complicated by dried rose, cinnamon, cured meat, iodine and mocha; this is one crazy nose. Fleshy dried red fruit flavors gain sweetness with air, picking up deeper cherry, toasted nut and candied anise qualities on the back end. The smooth finish features a late mineral kick. Utterly singular wine, and rose in name and color only." (Jun 08) 90 points Wine & Spirits: "Fully mature, this pale rosé is infused with Middle-Eastern spice. There's cherry red fruit that comes up behind it, tight and floral. Serve it with roast lamb or shwarma." (12/07)

- With more land under vine than any other country in the world, Spain is the great sleeping wine giant. In recent years, a great deal of money and passion has been poured in the burgeoning Spanish wine industry, helping to improve quality among its vast array of wines from sparkling Cava to Sherry to Rioja Gran Reserva. The most important red-wine-producing regions are Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Navarra in the north and Priorat and Penedes in the northeast.
