1989 Lopez de Heredia "Viña Tondonia" Reserva Blanco Rioja

SKU #1033806

93 points from Stephen Tanzers' International Wine Cellar: "Medium gold. An impressively complex bouquet evokes ripe pear, peach, floral honey, beeswax and hazelnut, with building minerality adding complexity. Weighty and ripe but with an unlikely freshness, showing deep, focused orchard and pit fruit qualities and undercurrents of stony minerals and toasted nuts. Firm and pleasingly dry on the finish, which is striking for its depth, energy and sappiness." (Jul/Aug 2007) 90 points from Wine Spectator: "The light-gold color is still bright and the flavors still vivid in this traditional white, which is firm and lean, with layered flavors of hazelnut, orange peel, beeswax and dried apple. A meditation wine, this is distinctive and impressive, but thinning a bit with age. Viura and Malvasia. Drink now through 2010. 2,500 cases made." (Oct 15, 2007)

In recent years, a great deal of money and passion has been poured in the burgeoning Spanish wine industry, helping to improve quality among its vast array of wines from sparkling Cava to Sherry to Rioja Gran Reserva. The most important red-wine-producing regions are Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Navarra in the north and Priorat and Penedes in the northeast.
