J Vineyards "Cuvée 20" Russian River Sparkling Wine

SKU #1033373 90 points Wine Spectator

Crisp and lively, with green apple, cream and fennel aromas and vibrant tropical fruit. The lemon and spice flavors finish on a clean mineral note. (11/2013)

Connoisseurs Guide

J's new Cuvée 20 is an inviting, very-easy-to-sip bubbly, the star player in which is lively, lightly candied, lemon-like fruit, yet there is a nice trim of subtle yeastiness at work as well, and the wine is clear about its champenized origins. It is fresh, clean tasting and frothy, and, while it finishes with plenty of bright, palate-cleansing acidity, it is never so tart or austere that it cannot also be enjoyed on its own as stand-alone sipper. (11/2013)

Wine Enthusiast

Crisp with acidity and yeasty on the palate with a sourdough tartness, this is a polished bubbly with interesting flavors of limes and strawberries. (2/2014)

K&L Notes

A splashy Brut created to celebrate J's 20th anniversary, the J Cuvée 20 is an assemblage from the winery's best cool-climate vineyard sites in the Russian River Valley. Lemon zest, honeysuckle and faintly yeasty aromas dominate the nose, with crisp apple and tart grapefruit underpinning the palate. Light toast, caramel and almond flavors round out the mid-palate. There's balanced acidity and fruit on the finish. An excellent display of depth and complexity, proving that J's still got it after 20+ years. 1.40% residual sugar. 50% Chardonnay, 49% Pinot Noir and 1% Pinot Meunier. 12.5% abv.

One of my favorite domestic bubblies. A very pretty nose of white flowers and minerals. On the palate, green apples and grapefruit with a samll bubble and a creamy pear finish. All this at a very affordable price.

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world. - With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year. Sonoma County

- Second in fame only to Napa, this "other" valley offers just about every climate and topography imaginable. From its cool and fog-enshrouded coastal regions on the far west, to the sprawling Alexander Valley on the boarder of Napa and the many little dips and peaks in between, Sonoma has been a vital wine-grape-growing region since the mid 1800s. Important sub-AVAs include Chalk Hill (known for chardonnay and sauvignon blanc), Dry Creek Valley (where zin is king) Knights Valley (largely cabernet land), Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast (both celebrated pinot and chardonnay zones).
