2003 Ojai "Melville Vineyard" Sta. Rita Hills Syrah
This particular bottling is all about size, ripeness and pure power. Its intense, full-volume aromas of chocolate, game and very ripe berries are followed up with bold and outgoing flavors that are simply loaded varietal spice and extravagant fruit. There is more than a little tannin coming on at the finish, but there is no let-up at all in terms of richness and fruit, and while so sweet and fleshy as to tempt early drinking, this is one best set aside for three or four years.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The full-bodied 2003 Syrah Melville Vineyard’s dense purple color is followed by copious amounts of floral, pepper, and blackberry scents along with a hint of smoke. It exhibits beautiful intensity, a multilayered texture, and savory, supple tannin in the impressive finish.
At four-plus years of age, this single-vineyard Syrah still has babyfat flavors of blackberry jam, cassis, red currants, licorice, cola, Asian spice and smoky oak that are fresh and vibrant. It’s lovely now, with a rich texture of finely-ground tannins, but should develop additional complexity with another five years in the cellar.
Aromas of spice, nutmeg and leather carry over to the palate, with a mix of wild berry and black cherry fruit. Folds together nicely on the finish, offering depth, complexity, length and firm tannins. Drink now through 2011. 511 cases made.
