2002 Hyde de Villaine "HdV" Carneros Chardonnay
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
Highly nuanced nose combines orange zest, truffle, iodine, mint, spices, lavender, dusty stone and nutty oak. Very intense, minerally, savory flavors of lemon, iodine and Islay scotch, all nicely framed by spicy oak. Finishes dry, subtle and long, with a flavor of peach.
This new HdV Chardonnay (the 2001 got 92 points in the Spectator) shows delicate aromas and flavors of white peach combined with spice and floral honey. In the mouth, finesse and purity are sustained by a firm acid structure. With its minerality, richness and long finish, this rare white is a clear expression of Hyde Vineyards terroir, which is situated on the eastern edge of the Carneros district as is known for producing Chardonnays that are at once intensely mineral and exceptionally balanced between fruit and acid. A stunner.
