 Impressive nose of meaty fruit and spices with ripe fruit. Medium- to full-bodied, with velvety tannins and plenty of blackberry and currant character. Enticing. Hints of barley. I like this better than the 2000.  (3/2004)

48% Cab, 33% Merlot, and 19% Cab Franc. Raspberry fruit aromas. Nice palate entry and quite tannic at back end.

Great value for an aged, ready-to-drink Bordeaux. With the classic developed notes of honey, earth, meat, and touch of capsicum, this wine is also elegantly poised. The palate is earthy, but full of dark chocolate and dark berries, with the tannins still quite present, assuring its frame.

Beautiful deep garnet robe; pepper, leather, fresh fruit on the nose. Good tannins, dry, leather and tobacco up front, bright acid and lush, ripe fruit on the back end. Oak is present and blends seamlessly with the fruit. The finish is long and pleasant. A great Bordeaux blend displaying its age beautifully.

2001 continues to be my vintage of choice from the new millennium. The wines are drinking well now and the Potensac is living proof of that. It's just a great combination of soft, integrated fruit, accents of earthiness, and the secondary development you want from a mature Bordeaux red wine. And it's affordable. What are you waiting for?

Tasted blind, I might have confused this gorgeous Bordeaux for Barolo, with its rose petal, cherry and spice box aromatics. In the mouth the cherry flavors just sing--they're fresh and clean--with just the right amount of weight and secondary characteristics poking through. Drinking great now; it gets better with a little air.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
