2001 Aia Vecchia "Lagone" Toscana
Very ripe, almost raisiny aromas, with lots of toasty oak. Full-bodied, with lots of raisin and treacle character and a long finish.
A Bordeaux style blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc and aged for a year in barrique, Aia Vecchia's "Lagone" is one of the Maremma's best Super Tuscan values. Now with over a decade of bottle age, this 2001 reveals softened tannins and earthy, savory complexity from integration of fruit and oak. Fans of mature claret take note! According to Wine Advocate: "Started in 1995, Aia Vecchia counts 42 hectares of vines between properties in Bolgheri and southern Maremma (Magliano in Toscana and Orbetello). At the Bolgheri property, long panoramas of manicured vineyard cut deep into the Mediterranean shrubs that blanket the hillsides. The focus is primarily international varieties, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, but smaller parcels are planted to Vermentino and Sangiovese." (08/2013, ML)
