1997 Castello Banfi "Poggio all'Oro" Brunello di Montalcino Riserva
Dark ruby red. Aromas of blackberry, dried flowers and cherry. Very intense and concentrated nose. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long flavorful finish. Lots of light vanilla and crushed dark fruits on the finish. Solid now, but better with age. (Web-2007)
Rock solid and compact. This wine is true-blue Brunello, meant to be cellared for 10 or more years. Flavors of plum, cherry and currant are pure, and there’s far more fruit here than wood. But the tannins are like nails and they get harder and harder with each sip. Yes, it’s a top-flight Brunello, but hold, for best results, until 2010.

Full bright ruby. Cherry liqueur, coffee and exotic woodsmoke on the superripe nose. Big and chewy on the palate; a broad, oaky wine with a strong impression of extract and plenty of personality. Flavors of crystallized red berries, coffee and mocha. Finishes with huge tannins that avoid dryness. Very true to the vintage. (ST)
