2016 Hartford Court Russian River Valley Chardonnay
Review Date: 07-27-2018
A classic style from the folks at Hartford Court that will be sure to please the California Chardonnay palate and surprise the white Burgundy drinker. Aromas of lilies, baked orchard fruit, candied citrus, starfruit, and baking spice. Quite a precise nose. The palate exudes a richness that is expected, along with ripe golden apples, lemon peel, toast and brioche. While this wine is opulent, it is also incredibly fresh and lively on the palate. A pleasing minerality on the finish as well. This would be a fantastic choice for a California Chardonnay that is made quite classically but is vivacious and bright enough to attract fans of richer styles of white Burgundy.

2014 Cristom "Estate" Eola-Amity Hills Pinot Noir
Review Date: 07-24-2018
One of my favorite Pinot Noirs I’ve had the chance of trying recently. Hailing from Oregon, the 2014 vintage was warmer than typical, and that is reflected in the aromas of the wine. Ripe berries and cherries are the first notes expressed. A bouquet of rose petal is also present on the back end. On the palate, the wine shows ripe red fruit, especially cherry, along with a firm structure that leads into silky tannins. All the while, there is a pleasant juiciness and bright acidity that cuts through the ripeness of the fruit. Hints of spice on the finish. A layered and complex Pinot Noir that while priced under-$40 drinks as if it were $50 or more

2009 La Rioja Alta "904" Gran Reserva Rioja
Review Date: 07-24-2018
La Rioja Alta does it again with another spectacular offering, this time their ‘904’ bottling from the 2009 vintage. Classic aromas of dried cherries and leather, along with American oak bouquet of dill and vanilla. Great acidity on the palate, with a pleasant balance also between the tannin structure and fruit. Quite well integrated, this wine will continue to improve with cellar time, but at just shy of 10 years old, it is drinking nicely at the moment. A fantastic wine with a variety of food offerings. I would recommend this to go with lamb roast. Pork chops or game bird would be also great pairing options

2016 Mas Codina Xarel-lo Penedes
Review Date: 07-24-2018
Mas Codina has become one of our favorite Spanish wine producers for sparkling wine here at K&L. Their new venture into red and white wines has proved to be hits as well. In particular, this Xarel-lo is in my opinion one of the best values that we are currently offering. The aromas initially are marked by minerally and chalky notes, followed by unripe orchard fruits and lemons. On the palate, unripe apple flavors play with notes of white flower, bitter almond, and citrus zest and pith. This wine’s structure, and especially its racy acidity, make it wine so particularly pleasing. One of the best white wines company-wide for under $20

Tasting well now, but certainly will improve immensely with time. A true Napa Valley classic that possesses the power, finesse, and grace to last 20 years and further.

One of my favorite American whiskies I have had the pleasure of trying. The aromas of dried fruits and caramelized sugars are quite charming. The real shining star of this whiskey though is its palate. There is a pleasant viscous and almost juicy quality it possesses that is lent by its time spent in Mistelle barrels. This is a beautiful representation of what Bourbon and American Whiskey can attain with the precise care and craftsmanship that the folks at Bardstown have bestowed upon it. Two thumbs up, special stuff!

Recently had the pleasure of trying this wine. Easily one of our best rosé offerings in Spain, if not in the entire store. This clarete style of rosado has aromas of fresh red berries, blood orange, and melon. There is a saline and slightly toasty quality to the wine as well. Overall, quite clean and pretty on the nose. The palate is fresh, and juicy, with flavors of peaches and strawberries giving way to crisp, mineral flavors on the finish. While possessing more weight than some typical rosé wines, this rosado is both lively on the palate and quite refreshing. It can be enjoyed on its own or accompanied by a wide variety of food options. From the folks at Banshee, this offering is from one of their newer venture in Oregon's Willamette Valley. The brand Averaen, is wonderful at showcasing what Oregon Pinot Noir can be. Ripe and candied notes of red berries and cherries, intermingle with earthy mushroom and forest floor tertiary characteristics. This Spanish white has arrived just in time as spring is in full swing. This wine has the clever name of "Mestizaje", which roughly translates to the act of mixing different things, and in this case grape varietals. The heart of this blend is a high acid white Merseguera, along with Viognier and Malvasia. The aromas initially are of orchard fruit, yellow citrus, and pronounced florals. On the palate, flavors of apricots, Meyer lemon, and rose petals. The florals on the palate are pronounced once more but they don't express a phenolic bitterness whatsoever. 2015 Clos Erasmus "Laurel" Priorat
Review Date: 03-04-2018
This is the second label for Clos Erasmus, and it does not disappoint. Aromas on the nose include a variety of dark and red fruits such as wild berries, blackcurrants, and red plum. A bouquet of dried flowers, rosebud, potpourri, spice, chaparral, and earthenware. The palate surprises with a nicely elevated acidity that cuts through the richness and plush fruit present. Flavors of blackberry, black cherry, and pomegranate along with some herbal notes. A little bit of an extra push from the alcohol on the finish. Chewy tannins and an overall voluptuous nature of the wine lend it to being a natural choice for certain food pairing choices, in particular grilled meats. I highly recommend for this to be decanted for at least 30 minutes (an hour is preferable) to let the wine aerate and reach its full potential. Quite a lovely and truly unique wine

On the palate, this white wine expresses flavors of stone fruit once more, with red apple, Bosc pear, and yellow grapefruit notes additionally. It’s crisp and relatively light compared with most other California Chardonnays. This is in part to the vinification in stainless steel and neutral oak, and lack of malolactic fermentation. 2015 Valravn "Old Vine" Sonoma County Zinfandel
Review Date: 02-26-2018
Another great zinfandel from Banshee’s project Valravn. I had the pleasure of trying their last vintage, 2014, this past year. Their 2015 release proves to be fantastic as well. Aromas of boysenberry, cassis, and blueberries are accompanied by a bouquet of chocolate covered orange and espresso. Berry medley flavors on the palate play with cocoa powder and luxardo cherries notes. Ripe flavors are contrasted with its freshness and light nature compared to other zinfandels I’ve tried. This wine is great texturally, and does not give the impression that it’s over 14.5% ABV either. A plethora of food pairing applications possible with this wine. This is slowly becoming a classic, and for under-$20 it’s easy to see why!
